What is Essential Tremor?
Essential Tremor (ET) is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary and rhythmic shaking. It can affect almost any part of the body, but the trembling occurs most often in the hands, especially when doing simple tasks like drinking from a glass or tying shoelaces. ET is not a life-threatening disorder but can significantly impact a person’s quality of life.
Symptoms of Essential Tremor
The symptoms of Essential Tremor include:
- Trembling in the Hands: Most noticeable when performing tasks or when trying to maintain a posture.
- Tremor that Worsens with Movement: Typically, tremors intensify when the affected limb is moved.
- Voice Changes: Trembling or shaking voice if the larynx or throat is affected.
- Head Nodding: In some cases, tremor can cause a “yes-yes” or “no-no” movement of the head.
- Balance Problems: Particularly in more advanced cases, which may affect walking or standing stability.
These symptoms may be mild at first but typically increase in severity without treatment.
