What is Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD)?
Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) is a condition characterized by the buildup of fatty plaques in the arteries, leading to narrowing and hardening of these vessels. This process can significantly increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral vascular disease. ASCVD is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide.
Symptoms of ASCVD
ASCVD often progresses silently; however, when symptoms do appear, they can include:
- Chest Pain or Angina: Often triggered by physical activity or stress.
- Shortness of Breath: Difficulty breathing during routine activities.
- Heart Attacks: Sudden blockage in coronary circulation causing severe chest pain, sweating, and nausea.
- Stroke: Sudden neurological deficit resulting from a blocked artery in the brain.
- Peripheral Artery Disease: Pain and cramping in the legs while walking or exercising.
