Understanding Allergy and Immunology
Allergy and immunology encompass a broad range of conditions that involve the immune system’s response to harmless substances as allergens, or abnormal immune reactions to normal body components in autoimmune diseases. Allergies are among the most common chronic conditions globally, while immunologic disorders can significantly impact various bodily functions and overall health.
Symptoms of Allergic and Immunologic Disorders
Common symptoms associated with allergic reactions and immunologic disorders include:
- Allergic Reactions: Sneezing, runny or blocked nose, itchy eyes, skin rashes, and in severe cases, anaphylaxis—a potentially life-threatening reaction that can impair breathing and send the body into shock.
- Autoimmune Symptoms: Depending on the specific condition, symptoms can include joint pain, muscle stiffness, fever, fatigue, and disturbances affecting various organs like the thyroid, skin, or kidneys.
- Immunodeficiency Symptoms: Frequent infections, delayed recovery from illness, and, in severe cases, an increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections.
